about

The fall of 1995 is what I would officially label as the beginning of my production career. Once I got sight of Eastern Michigan University's student radio station, WQBR, I instantly started thinking of every musical idea I had in my first 20 years of life, and how exactly I could execute it.

My goal upon entering Eastern Michigan University was to get as much experience as I could recording, editing and mixing. Honestly enough, I put my goal of getting experience over graduating (LOL). These recordings show the beginnings of that experience. With the exception of "The Weight" and "The Purchase (Part 2)" (which were beats that I got from Sean Thomas), as well as "CT-615" (an original composition by an instrumentalist I met on campus) and "Butter", all of these songs were performed over loops of other rappers' beats.

From 9am to 5pm, the Quirk building of Eastern Michigan University was the student lab for editing, recording, production and radio broadcasting...from 7pm to 3, 4 or 5am sometimes, it was gREG bASS's House Of Hits. There was a Tascam 8-Track Recorder there that utilized cassettes as a recording medium. It was hardly used, but due to all the dreams I had of recording, mixing and editing like all of the records I'd heard as a teen, I decided to put it to good use.

The way this originally came to be, was through a cat I had met through my association with WQBR - his name is Plee. Plee wandered into the radio studio one day, and we struck up a conversation. We became fast friends through the music, and thanks to Plee, word quickly spread that I had access to record people, and I had cats coming from all over campus saying they could rap and wanted me to record them. I never charged money because I was having too much fun to even think about money.

These recordings also show why I decided to focus on production and stop rapping. Yeah, I was proud of a couple of my attempts ("The Purchase" and the Winter 97 Radio Show Theme), but overall, I think I made the right decision. :-)

Also, these songs show the first drafts of ideas I would use for future recordings. I'll admit I was secretly scouting to find the best rappers to make music with that I would eventually attempt to sell.

The name "Platinum Shit" was Plee's idea. It was actually born out of the jokes that were cracked by him & Jerome (aka Ego) at end of "The Last Bullshit".

As far as this being Part 1? Well, all of these songs were originally recorded on a Tascam cassette 8-track, with the final mixes recorded to reel-to-reel tapes. One of these days, when I can get access to a reel-to-reel machine, I'll post up the rest.
